National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute) was founded in 1942 as the Moscow Mechanical Institute of Munitions, established under the guidance of legendary physicist Igor Kurchatov — the "father of the Soviet atomic bomb." In 2009, by the order of the Russian Government, MEPhI was granted the prestigious status of one of Russia's first two "National Research Universities."
