All About the University of Zenica

The University of Zenica (Univerzitet u Zenici) is a public university located in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Founded in 2000 by the Parliament of Zenica-Doboj Canton, it traces its academic roots back to 1959 and offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across engineering, medicine, law, economics, and the humanities — making it one of the key higher education institutions in the country.

About the University of Zenica

The history of higher education in Zenica begins in 1959 with the founding of the Higher Technical School of Metallurgy. By 1961, it had grown into the Faculty of Metallurgy as part of the University of Sarajevo. A second faculty — the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering — was established in 1977, and for many years these two faculties formed the backbone of higher education in the region, producing professionals who drove the industrial development of Zenica and beyond.

Following the post-war period, higher education in Zenica expanded rapidly. The Pedagogical Academy was founded in 1994, and additional faculties in Economics, Law, Medicine, Philosophy, and Islamic Studies were established or consolidated. On October 18, 2000, the University of Zenica was formally founded as an independent institution by decision of the Zenica-Doboj Canton Assembly. Today it is a member of the Balkan Universities Network and hosts an annual graduation ceremony at Arena Zenica every October.
