About University of Sarajevo
The University of Sarajevo traces its intellectual roots to 1537 when Gazi Husrev Bey inaugurated a madrasa as an Ottoman institute of higher education. Its modern, secular incarnation developed during the Austro-Hungarian era, when institutions such as the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina were established. The Faculty of Medicine was first founded in 1944, re-established in 1946, and formally became part of the modern university when it was inaugurated in 1949.
