About University of Sarajevo

The University of Sarajevo traces its intellectual roots to 1537 when Gazi Husrev Bey inaugurated a madrasa as an Ottoman institute of higher education. Its modern, secular incarnation developed during the Austro-Hungarian era, when institutions such as the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina were established. The Faculty of Medicine was first founded in 1944, re-established in 1946, and formally became part of the modern university when it was inaugurated in 1949.

Today, UNSA comprises 22 faculties, 3 academies, 5 centres, and 5 institutes, with over 100 study programmes and more than 200 departments. With around 34,000 enrolled students, it ranks among the largest universities in the Balkans. The university has partnerships with over 120 universities across Europe, the US, Canada, and the Middle East, and holds the prestigious Erasmus Charter in Higher Education (ECHE) 2021–2027 from the European Commission. Since 1949, over 122,000 students have received bachelor's degrees, 3,891 master's degrees, and 2,284 doctoral degrees across 45 fields.
