About University of Banja Luka

The University of Banja Luka was established on 7 November 1975, making it the second university in then-Bosnia and Herzegovina and the fifteenth in former Yugoslavia. Its origins trace back to 1950 when the first Teacher Training College was founded in Banja Luka with just 38 students. The Faculty of Engineering followed in 1961, and the Faculty of Economics in 1969, with several faculties branching off from the University of Sarajevo before becoming fully independent institutions.

Today the university comprises 16 faculties spread across two main campuses close to the Vrbas river in central Banja Luka. It hosts over 17,000 students and approximately 1,000 academic staff. Since April 2011, it has been a full member of the European University Association and participates in TEMPUS, CEEPUS, and international student exchange programmes with institutions such as Sapienza University of Rome, the University of Strasbourg, and the University of Graz. The Faculty of Medicine — established in 1978 — is supported by a 907-bed teaching hospital providing extensive clinical exposure to medical students.
