About Helwan University

Officially established on July 26, 1975, under Presidential Decree (Law No. 70 of 1975), Helwan University covers 350 acres of land at Ain Helwan, which is located about 25 kilometers from Cairo towards the east bank of the Nile River, between the Nile Valley and El Mokattam hills. Being the newest among the three main governmental universities in Cairo, it has its origins dating back to the 19th century when Muhammad Ali of Egypt founded "The Operations School," the basis for many of the institutes now known as Helwan University.

Currently, Helwan University has 21 faculties and 50 research and production units with a total student population of over 150,000 undergraduate students and 20,000 postgraduate students along with other students from different nationalities. Helwan University is unique among all other universities in Egypt due to its focus on science and applications but also because of the presence of faculties of Arts, Fine Arts, Applied Arts, Music Education, and Physical Education. The Faculty of Medicine, opened in 2013, is attached to a university hospital that runs an internationally acclaimed English medium MBBS program.
