About Semey State Medical University

Semey State Medical University was founded in 1952 as Semipalatinsk State Medical Institute, with the first batch of 320 students enrolled in the General Medicine faculty in 1953. Over time, the university expanded with the addition of the Pediatrics faculty in 1963, Stomatology in 1991, and Medico-Prophylactic and Pharmaceutical faculties in 2003. In 1984, SSMU extended its post-diploma education to Pavlodar city, and in 2009, the institute achieved full university status and was renamed Semey State Medical University.

Today, SSMU is one of the largest medical universities in Kazakhstan, with its own hospital (11 buildings) and branches in Pavlodar and Ust-Kamenogorsk. The university is home to over 4,500 students — including 600+ international students from India, Pakistan, and Central Asian countries — taught by 450 faculty members including 35 Doctors of Sciences, 1 Academician, and 168 PhDs. Graduates of SSMU successfully work across Kazakhstan and in countries worldwide.
