About Samarkand State Medical University

Samarkand State Medical University was founded on May 7, 1930, by the Council of People's Commissars of the Uzbek SSR, initially known as the State Uzbek Medical Institute (GUZMI). It holds the historic distinction of being the first medical institution in Central Asia, predating the modern MBBS-abroad industry by over six decades. During World War II (1942–1944), the university played a pivotal role in training medical personnel and dispatching trained doctors to battlefields.

In 2022, reflecting its modernised scope and expanded programmes, the institution was formally restructured and renamed Samarkand State Medical University — an upgrade that acknowledges both its 95-year heritage and its forward-looking academic development. Today, SamSMU serves over 11,000 students (including 3,200+ international students from India, Pakistan, China, Germany, Korea, and more) through 9 faculties, 74 departments, 624 faculty members, 1,190 computer-equipped classrooms, and 75 multimedia auditoriums. It has received international institutional accreditation from ECAQA (Eurasian Centre for Accreditation and Quality Assurance), valid until 2030.
